Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 27, 2026
The Commonplace is an iOS app for asking questions of a curated theological library. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Information We Collect
You can use the app without registration. On first launch, the app creates a random guest identifier so we can provide chat access, enforce free usage limits, and recognize subscription status without asking for your name or email address.
If you optionally sign in with Apple, we receive the account identifier Apple provides and, if you choose to share it, your email address and name. We use Supabase to manage optional authentication and account records.
When you use the app, we process the questions you ask, recent conversation context, and generated responses so the service can answer your requests. We also store basic usage records, such as question counts, to enforce free trial limits and subscription access.
Subscription status is processed through RevenueCat and Apple. We do not receive or store your full payment card information.
We use PostHog for product analytics so we can understand app interactions, feature usage, errors, and reliability. We do not use PostHog for advertising or to track you across other apps or websites.
How We Use Information
- To provide guest access without requiring registration.
- To sign you in and maintain your account if you choose to create one.
- To provide chat responses from the app's theological library.
- To manage trial limits, subscriptions, purchases, and restores.
- To respond to support requests and reports you send to us.
- To understand app usage, diagnose errors, maintain security, prevent abuse, and keep the service reliable.
AI Processing
The Commonplace sends your question and limited conversation context to our server, which retrieves relevant excerpts from the app's library and uses OpenAI to generate a response. Your OpenAI API access is handled on our server; the key is not included in the app.
Local Data
Chat threads may be stored locally on your device so you can return to prior conversations. Deleting the app may remove local-only data from that device.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information or track you across apps or websites. We use service providers to operate the app, including Apple, Supabase, RevenueCat, Vercel, OpenAI, and PostHog. These providers process information only as needed to provide their services to us.
Account Deletion
If you choose to sign in, you can delete your account in the app from Settings. Account deletion removes your account from our authentication system and clears saved local threads from the app. Guest users can delete local app data by deleting the app from the device. You may also contact us at na.white04@gmail.com for help.
Children
The Commonplace is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes
We may update this policy as the app changes. If we make material changes, we will update the date above and, when appropriate, provide notice in the app or on this page.
